Our Preparation for “The Elf on a Shelf”
Where did this year go? 2017 was such a big year for us that it is hard to imagine that it is coming to an end. Halloween went in the blink of an eye and before we know it Thanksgiving will be here and then Christmas followed shortly by 2018.
This year we decided we would try “The Elf on a Shelf”. Prior to reading the actual book our only knowledge of it was parents put it out every night, then the kids find it in the morning and it is supposed to promote good behavior before Christmas. Well, with our three year old acting out more and more we decided to give this a shot. If remembering to do it every night would make him stop hitting or talking back it’s worth it right?
Of course Amazon had that little beauty ready and could be at our house in 2 days. When it arrived, I couldn’t help but think, “Ugh. We’re this family now. We are going to ‘those’ parents.” Which in a way is great because I LOVE doing cute things like this and will be the person that posts them every day flooding your news feed. But on the other hand I felt slightly guilty we felt it was necessary to resort to these measures. But, whatever works.
I began to check out Pinterest for some fun ideas. It was almost overwhelming how many great ideas people had. However I struggled trying to find something for the very first visit from your elf. There are tons of “I’m Back” posts but nothing for that very first visit. This is something we want our son to be excited about. We want him to want to behave. And so we began to write this little poem. It isn’t long but we think it will do. We’ve attached it so please feel free to use it too. (We’re apparently still into this rhyming thing.) So if you are struggling to find something for that special first visit please feel free to use this.
The day after Thanksgiving we are planning to have the big reveal. Some kind of breakfast with the book, the elf, the poem and maybe something special too. We want our son fully understand the concept. This might be a little too much for a three year old but we think he will be ok.
We are going to do our best to post what we are doing every day here or on Instagram so be sure to follow us there too! We hope you have fun with this and feel free to give us your best ideas for “The Elf on the Shelf”!
